The bass guitar is a relatively forgotten instrument, as it is often seen as the backbone of a song’s rhythm section, and is rarely featured in the front line. Bass guitarist Mike Hall, however, is determined to change that and reinvent the way modern audiences think about the instrument. Over the past year, the American musician has looked at the bass as far more than simply the complimentary backbone to any given arrangement. Instead, he has transformed the bass guitar into a worthy solo instrument by way of a playing style that has captivated audiences far and wide.

Hall began his journey into music at a young age; in elementary school he began performing on the cello, only to later transition onto upright bass at the request of his orchestra teacher. In his college years, he discovered the joy of making music on his own terms, and was able to study the works of four prolific bassists: Cliff Burton from Metallica, Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers, Larry Graham from Sly and the Family Stone, and Victor Wooten. These four musicians inspired him to look at the bass guitar in a brand new way, which has helped sculpt his playing into one of a true virtuoso.

Hall’s entrance into the music industry came in 2010, through his Pop/Rock band known as Running Late. In the band; he made a name for himself as one of the most exciting bassists to watch in the tristate music scene, all while performing alongside numerous major label artists such as Third Eye Blind, Blues Traveler, Collective Soul, MGMT, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Blondie, and Lifehouse. However, it wasn’t until earlier this year with the release of his debut EP The Next Step that Hall catapulted into the spotlight. His innovative approach to bass playing; which involves a mix of two-handed tapping, flamenco strumming, slapping, and interwoven harmonics, has quickly made him one of the most prominent representatives of solo bass playing worldwide.

Apart from his EP, he has also been making many covers and arrangements for popular songs that can be found across social media. These songs all come from different genres which help showcase even further all the potential that the bass has as an instrument. With the recent announcement of his next EP in the making: The Next Step: Volume II, his EP and covers are only the start of what is sure to be a great journey in pushing the boundaries of the instrument.
